You may be more qualified than you think! A Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) is not required for substitute teaching in the »ÆÉ«µçÓ°. If you’ve completed a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university or an Early Childhood Educator Certificate (ECE II), you meet the educational qualifications to join our team as a non-certified substitute teacher.

HSD serves the communities of Blumenort, Bothwell, Crystal Springs, Grunthal, Kleefeld, Landmark, Mitchell, Niverville, and Steinbach. The Division employs approx. 1,100 staff, serving approx. 8,900 students in 19 schools. We are the largest rural school division in Manitoba.

What Do Substitute Teachers Do?

Substitute teachers have an essential role in ensuring that student learning continues without interruption. A variety of reasons, such as illness, professional development, and compassionate leaves, often require regular teachers to be absent. At such times, substitutes are called to fulfill the tasks of the regular teacher.

Substitute teachers maintain the same working hours as the regular classroom teachers of the school in which they are substituting, and perform the duties assigned to the regular teacher (in addition to teaching) including, but not limited to, indoor and/or outdoor supervision responsibilities.

What Skills and Attributes Should Substitute Teachers Have?

Interested candidates should demonstrate or be willing to:

  • Have a sincere interest in working with children.
  • Demonstrate kindness, patience, and respect for all students.
  • Follow a plan that is left by the classroom teacher.
  • Work cooperatively with school staff.

How Much Does Substitute Teaching Pay?

Substitute teachers will be paid as per the provincial :

Non-Certified: $165.00 per day, inclusive of holiday and vacation pay.

Certified: $206.00 per day, inclusive of holiday and vacation pay.

Can I Choose When and Where I Work?

clock and calendarYes. Substitute teaching provides maximum flexibility on when and where you choose to accept teaching assignments. Substitute teachers can access the Book a Job self-booking system in our CIMS Employee portal. The substitute calling clerk may call as early as 5:30 a.m. to fill remaining openings. A substitute teacher may remove their name from the calling list at any time.

Are There Opportunities for Recent B.Ed. Graduates

High School GraduatesSubstitute teaching is an excellent way to develop a relationship with prospective employers. HSD typically registers 20-30 B.Ed. university graduates as substitute teachers for the months of May and June. Graduates registering as substitute teachers will be registered for a limited teaching permit from the Professional Certification Unit. What Are the Steps in the Hiring Process?

The first step in the hiring process is for applicants to submit their application through the . Please note that only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted. If after interview, a tentative job offer is extended, the applicant will be responsible for obtaining the following background checks:

  • A Criminal Record Check, including a Vulnerable Sector Search
  • A Manitoba Child Abuse Registry Check

All new background checks must be dated within 3 months of the date submitted to the employer and include all current and past full legal names that match your birth certificate and marriage certificate, divorce decree, or official name change document (if applicable).

Once these background checks are successfully passed and clearance is obtained, the Division will submit a formal application for a Limited Teaching Permit on behalf of the applicant to Manitoba Education and Early Childhood Learning. To complete this application, the applicant must provide the following documents:

  • A photocopy of their Birth Certificate
  • A photocopy of proof of Canadian Citizenship, Landed Immigrant Status, or valid Work Visa (If born in Canada, the Birth Certificate serves as proof of citizenship.)
  • A photocopy of an Official Name Change Document (if applicable)
  • A copy of Grade 12 or equivalent certification or Post-secondary course work transcript(s)

If any of the required clearances are not obtained, the tentative job offer may be withdrawn.

For a currently enroled Manitoba Bachelor of Education Student, please note that a permission letter or list from the Dean of the Faculty of Education supporting the LTP request is required.
